Kaspersky PURE 2.0 Total Security delivers the ultimate PC protection for your home, combining everything you need to ensure the security of your PCs, identity, passwords, photos and more. Kaspersky PURE 2.0 is the very first product I’ve tested with my new malware collection, so I didn’t really know what to expect. On over half of the infested test systems the product installed without issue and launched an unusually lengthy initial update; I timed the installation at five minutes and the update at 15. On a few of these systems Kaspersky requested a reboot right away, to handle active malware.

A powerful antivirus engine delivers strong real-time protection, for instance, monitoring your downloads, email attachments.

An excellent firewall stops network attacks and prevents spyware from phoning home, while keeping annoying pop-up alerts to a minimum.

Phishing protection helps to protect you from online scams, while another module scans all scripts processed in Internet Explorer, blocking anything dangerous from running.

A simple backup program makes it quick and easy to keep your most valuable documents and files from disaster.

Parental controls keep your kids safe online; a spam filter protects your inbox; a vulnerability scanner detects and highlights poorly chosen Windows and IE settings.

Since its initial release last year, Kaspersky PURE has undergone a bit of fine-tuning. Its user interface now appears strictly in muted greens and grays, eliminating the previous edition’s multi-colored icons. Some features are more easily accessible, others have had their configuration settings revamped.

Kaspersky routinely attains top honors in independent lab tests. In both on-demand and retrospective tests by AV-Comparatives.org, Kaspersky’s technology received a rating of ADVANCED+, the highest rating. It also took ADVANCED+ in this lab’s dynamic whole-product test. In fact, AV-Comparatives named Kaspersky product of the year for 2011.

Kaspersky PURE contains a whole arsenal of components aimed at keeping a clean system clean. First up is the Web antivirus. When I tried to download my new malware collection it denied access to almost 60 percent of the URLs. Kaspersky caught another 20 percent during the download process. That’s a good start.

As noted, Kaspersky PURE’s parental control keeps the kids from revealing too-private information on the Web. Its password manager offers the same features found in Kaspersky Password Manager 4. Like most password managers it captures login credentials as you enter them and plays them back when you revisit the same site. It can also fill Web forms with user-defined personal data.

Kaspersky’s Privacy Cleaner, found on the Additional Tools page, clears traces of recent PC and browser activity, so nobody else can track what you’ve been doing on the computer.

Kaspersky’s backup is strictly local, unless you count the ability to back up files to an FTP site that you’ve configured (a task beyond the abilities of most users). It will store your backed-up files on any local, network, or removable drive. New in this edition, predefined backup profiles automatically select music, photos, movies, or documents.

Kaspersky offers two types of virtualization, Safe Run for Websites and Safe Run for Applications. The former launches a virtualized browser while the latter starts a virtualized Windows session. You can also right-click any program to run it under Safe Run.

You can use Kaspersky to create any number of encrypted containers—folders that are accessible only when unlocked with a password. New in this edition, the product comes with one encrypted container already configured, needing only your choice of password.
